Voices…
Many years ago, I observed an odd sight on one of the main streets of Bathurst. A man stood on a platform attached to the roof racks of an old Holden station wagon. With lips pressed to a hand held megaphone he preached his gospel message. I found that a little odd.
What wasn’t odd? Everybody else on that busy shopping centre street seemed to think it was odd too. I suspect very few, if any, actually heard the message he was proclaiming. The large number of children sitting in his car seemed to wish they were elsewhere. Perhaps everyone on the street thought similarly?
The loudest voice isn’t necessarily heard. Ever considered the voice of God? On very rare occasions it’s described as an audible voice from heaven. Perhaps the most memorable is the proud dad moment: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased” (Matthew 17:5). More often his voice is hushed and heard in still, quiet places. Sometimes his voice is not heard at all but understood in his actions: it is God’s kindness that leads hearts to change (Romans 2:4). There are many ways to be ‘heard’. What’s our favourite? Which do we use?
