Who’s that knocking at the door…

We don’t have a doorbell at our home.  If someone wants to get our attention they need to knock.  There’s always a sense of intrigue when that happens.  “I wonder who that is?”  Most often there’s a little excitement to open the door.  Is it someone we’re pleased to see?  Someone we’re delighted to greet and invite them in?  Or perhaps, “Oh really?  At this time of day?”  Or maybe, “Thank you, but I gave at the office.”

What if that person wants to come in for dinner?   What if they say, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me”?

What if that someone wants to move in?  What if they say, “I want this to be my dwelling place”?

I guess it depends on who that person is.  Personally, I wouldn’t be that happy if they wore white gloves constantly checking for dust.  Or perhaps questioning and judging all that I do.  I suspect I might be living my life in fear of consequences or punishment.

But what if that person was full of grace and love?  What if that person is Jesus (John 1:14)?  Yes.  That’s who it is.  Jesus is knocking at the door (Revelation 3:20).  He is not a God who sits on a throne with a sceptre of judgement.  He wants to come in to dwell with us bringing peace and tranquility.

I write this on a wintry day in the warmth and in the comfort of a soft lounge.  This is also where I like to connect with Jesus.  This is what prayer is like.  Letting him in.  Sitting with him.  Dwelling with him.  Living in grace and peace.
